Most mold you find in a home is not the toxic black mold you’ve read about in headlines. But telling them apart by color alone is unreliable — and that’s the part most articles skip. The short answer: Stachybotrys chartarum, the species commonly called “black mold,” is one of hundreds of mold types that can appear dark-colored, and several common household molds also grow in black or near-black shades. The only way to confirm a species is laboratory testing. What you can do at home is assess the growth pattern, location, smell, and surface texture to make a more informed call about urgency.
Why Color Is a Poor Diagnostic Tool
The phrase “black mold” has become shorthand for Stachybotrys chartarum, but the color of a mold colony tells you very little about its species or its risk level. Consider what you might actually be looking at:

Conversely, “regular” mold is not always white or green. The color of any mold colony depends on the species, the substrate it’s growing on, its age, and the moisture level. A white fuzzy patch on drywall is still mold. A green ring in a ceiling corner is still mold. Neither color tells you whether you need professional remediation.

Growth location and moisture history
Stachybotrys is a slow-growing mold that requires sustained, heavy moisture — think a roof leak that went unaddressed for weeks, a flooded crawl space, or drywall that stayed wet after a pipe burst. It colonizes cellulose-rich materials: drywall paper, ceiling tiles, wood framing, cardboard. If you’re seeing dark mold on a surface that has been wet for an extended period and that surface contains paper or wood fiber, the risk of Stachybotrys is higher than if you’re looking at mildew on a shower tile.
Texture
Active Stachybotrys colonies feel slick or gelatinous when wet. As they dry, they become powdery and can release spores easily when disturbed. Common bathroom molds like Cladosporium tend to have a more uniform, slightly fuzzy or powdery texture throughout their growth cycle.
Smell
All mold produces microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that create that recognizable musty odor. Stachybotrys tends to produce a stronger, earthier, more pungent smell — sometimes described as rotting soil or decay — compared to the lighter musty scent of surface bathroom molds. If you open a wall cavity and the smell is overwhelming, that’s a signal worth taking seriously.
Spread pattern
Surface molds on tile or painted walls tend to stay on the surface and wipe away (though this doesn’t mean you should wipe them). Stachybotrys grows into porous materials. If you see dark staining that appears to be inside drywall, wood, or insulation rather than sitting on top, the material is likely colonized through its depth.
What to Do If You Find Suspicious Mold Growth
Before you do anything else, stop and assess the size of the area.
- Measure the affected area. The EPA’s general guidance for homeowners is that mold patches smaller than 10 square feet (roughly a 3×3-foot section) can often be handled by a careful DIYer on non-porous surfaces. Larger areas, or any growth on porous materials like drywall or insulation, typically warrant professional assessment.
- Don’t disturb the growth. Scrubbing, vacuuming with a standard vacuum, or blasting with compressed air sends spores airborne and can spread contamination to unaffected rooms.
- Improve ventilation in the room, not throughout the house. Open a window in the affected room, but close the door to prevent spores from traveling through your HVAC system. If you have a whole-house HVAC, consider turning it off until the area is assessed.

- Don’t assume a negative home test kit result is definitive. Consumer mold test kits collect airborne spores over a set period. They can confirm mold is present, but they cannot identify the species reliably, and a negative result doesn’t mean the air is clean — it may mean spores weren’t actively releasing during the collection window.
